Choosing an accountant

01How can Crevaty support my small business?+

Crevaty Tax Consultancy UK Limited is a firm of Qualified Chartered Accountants on St Faith Street, Maidstone. It provides bookkeeping, Self Assessment, VAT, payroll, limited company accounts and company formation for sole traders, freelancers and small companies across Kent, with fixed fees and a dedicated accountant.

02How much does an accountant cost?+

At Crevaty, bookkeeping and VAT start from £25 a month, Self Assessment tax returns from £50 a year, limited company accounts and Corporation Tax from £200 a year, and payroll from £5 per employee a month. Every fee is fixed and agreed before work starts. The exact price depends on your turnover, transactions, VAT and payroll.

03Can I switch accountants mid-year?+

Yes. You can switch at any time. We contact your previous accountant with your permission, collect your records, set up HMRC and Companies House authorisations and take over your deadlines. Most handovers are completed within a few weeks.

04Do you work with clients outside Maidstone?+

Yes. We serve clients across Kent, including Aylesford, Kings Hill, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Sittingbourne, Ashford and Medway, and throughout the UK online.

05Do you work with Xero and QuickBooks?+

Yes. Our qualified team can set up, migrate and run Xero and QuickBooks for sole traders and small companies. You get bank feeds, receipt capture and live figures, with bookkeeping and VAT from £25 a month.

Sole traders and Self Assessment

01Do I need an accountant as a sole trader?+

No, it isn't a legal requirement. But a qualified accountant makes sure you claim all allowable expenses, meet Making Tax Digital rules and file accurately and on time. For most sole traders, the tax and time saved outweigh the fee.

02When is the Self Assessment deadline?+

Online tax returns and any balancing payment are due by 31 January following the end of the tax year on 5 April. New taxpayers must register by 5 October. A second payment on account, if due, is paid by 31 July.

03Does Making Tax Digital for Income Tax apply to me?+

It applies to sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 from 6 April 2026, over £30,000 from April 2027 and over £20,000 from April 2028. Qualifying income is gross self-employment and property income before expenses.

04What expenses can I claim as self-employed?+

You can claim costs incurred wholly and exclusively for your business. These include travel, vehicle costs, a share of home-office costs, phone and internet, tools and equipment, insurance, marketing, professional fees and relevant training.

Limited companies

01Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?+

A limited company can be more tax-efficient at higher profit levels and limits your personal liability, but it involves more administration. The best choice depends on your profits, how much you draw and your plans. We compare both options with your real figures.

02How do I pay myself as a company director?+

Most directors take a small salary plus dividends from profits after Corporation Tax, sometimes with pension contributions paid by the company. The best mix changes with tax rules and your circumstances, so we review it every year.

03What does an accountant do for a limited company each year?+

We prepare statutory accounts for Companies House, file the Corporation Tax return with HMRC, file the confirmation statement, run director payroll, prepare directors' tax returns and advise on tax planning. Many clients also hand over their bookkeeping and VAT.

04What are the Companies House identity checks?+

All company directors and people with significant control must verify their identity with Companies House. New directors must verify before they're appointed, and existing directors when they file their next confirmation statement. Each person verifies directly with Companies House, usually through GOV.UK One Login.

VAT

01When do I need to register for VAT?+

You must register when your VAT-taxable turnover over the last 12 months exceeds £90,000, or if you expect it to exceed £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. Registering voluntarily below the threshold can also benefit some businesses.

International

01Can a UK business set up a company in Dubai or the UAE?+

Yes. UK businesses and individuals can set up free zone or mainland companies in the UAE, often with 100% foreign ownership. Crevaty has its own office in Business Bay, Dubai, and advises on both UK and UAE tax.
